Movement & Exercise Psychotherapy™
Movement & Exercise Psychotherapy™ (MEP™) is a unique psychotherapy approach that intentionally integrates physical movement and somatic awareness into the therapeutic process. This approach is grounded in the understanding that emotions, stress, and trauma are experienced not only cognitively, but also physiologically, through the body and nervous system.
For some individuals, incorporating movement into therapy can support emotional regulation, awareness, and engagement in ways that complement traditional talk-based approaches. MEP™ offers an alternative or adjunct for clients who find that sitting and talking alone does not fully meet their needs. MEP™ is psychotherapy, and movement is used therapeutically.
MEP™ may be particularly supportive for individuals whose nervous systems are regularly exposed to high levels of stress, stimulation, or demand.
For individuals working in emergency services, first response, or other high-pressure helping roles, stress is often experienced physically, through chronic tension, hyperarousal, shutdown, or difficulty transitioning out of “work mode.” Integrating movement into psychotherapy can support nervous system regulation, provide an outlet for stress held in the body, and create opportunities to process experiences in ways that do not rely solely on verbal reflection.
MEP™ may also be beneficial for neurodivergent individuals, including those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Individuals with ASD or ADHD may experience sensory processing differences, challenges with interoceptive awareness, restlessness, or difficulty sustaining attention during traditional talk-based therapy alone. Structured, predictable movement can support regulation, focus, and engagement, while offering alternative pathways for self-awareness and emotional processing. MEP™ is also well adapted for children and youth, with sessions paced to support safety, regulation, and engagement.
MEP™ can be offered in person or virtually, with movement adapted to the client’s environment, abilities, and therapeutic goals. Virtual sessions can be adapted using available equipment, or can also incorporate simple, accessible movement, grounding activities, or body-based regulation strategies that can be safely completed at home.
As with all services at Strength Within Psychotherapy, the use of movement is collaborative, consent-based, and adapted to individual needs. MEP™ is not a one-size-fits-all approach and may be integrated differently depending on each client’s goals, preferences, and clinical presentation.
