Autism & Neurodiversity-Affirming Psychotherapy in Ontario
Autism is a unique way of experiencing and interacting with the world.
Every autistic individual has their own strengths, challenges, interests, and support needs. Some children, teens, and adults with autism may experience challenges related to emotional regulation, anxiety, social communication, sensory processing, transitions, executive functioning, self-esteem, or navigating a world that is not always designed to meet their needs.
We provide neurodiversity-affirming psychotherapy that recognizes and respects each individual's unique experiences while supporting meaningful goals identified by the client and their family.
Autistic individuals may experience challenges such as:
• Emotional regulation difficulties
• Anxiety
• Sensory sensitivities
• Executive functioning challenges
• Difficulty with transitions
• Social communication differences
• School-related stress
• Burnout
• Low self-esteem
• Masking or camouflaging autistic traits
• Difficulty understanding or expressing emotions
• Navigating friendships and relationships
Every autistic individual is different.
Therapy is never about changing who someone is. Instead, our goal is to help individuals better understand themselves, develop practical coping strategies, build confidence, strengthen emotional regulation skills, and improve overall quality of life.
Psychotherapy provides a supportive, collaborative, and individualized space where autistic individuals can explore their experiences without judgment while developing skills that support their personal goals.
Together, we work to:
• Improve emotional regulation
• Better understand emotions
• Develop practical coping strategies
• Reduce anxiety
• Strengthen executive functioning skills
• Build confidence and self-acceptance
• Improve flexibility during transitions
• Develop communication and social confidence when desired
• Support independence and daily functioning
Our approach is neurodiversity-affirming, collaborative, and individualized.
We draw from evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based strategies, strengths-based approaches, and practical skill development. Therapy is adapted to each individual's communication style, sensory preferences, developmental level, and personal goals.
We recognize that many autistic individuals process emotions differently and may benefit from approaches that extend beyond traditional office-based therapy. For some clients, Movement & Exercise Psychotherapy™ (MEP™) provides an alternative approach that integrates psychotherapy with purposeful movement and exercise. MEP™ may support emotional regulation, body awareness, sensory regulation, attention, confidence, and therapeutic engagement in a way that feels more natural for some individuals.
We work with autistic children, teens, and adults, as well as families seeking support. Parent consultation and coaching may also be incorporated when appropriate to help caregivers better understand their child's strengths, needs, and emotional development. Virtual psychotherapy is available throughout Ontario, providing flexible access to autism-affirming mental health support from the comfort of your home. In-person Movement & Exercise Psychotherapy™ sessions are also available in Orangeville, Ontario.
Every autistic individual deserves to feel understood, supported, and empowered to thrive.
