Trauma Therapy & Psychotherapy in Ontario
Experiencing trauma can change the way you see yourself, others, and the world around you.
You may find yourself constantly on edge, avoiding reminders of what happened, struggling with sleep, experiencing nightmares, or feeling emotionally numb. Some people notice increased anxiety, irritability, guilt, or difficulty trusting others. Others simply feel like they are no longer the person they once were.
Trauma can result from a single distressing event or develop over time through repeated exposure to overwhelming experiences. Whether your experiences involve childhood trauma, workplace incidents, accidents, assault, medical trauma, first responder work, or other significant life events, healing is possible.
Trauma affects everyone differently.
There is no "right" way to respond to traumatic experiences, and symptoms may appear immediately or develop months or even years later.
Some common symptoms of trauma may include:
• Intrusive memories or flashbacks
• Nightmares or disrupted sleep
• Feeling constantly on guard or hypervigilant
• Increased anxiety or panic
• Emotional numbness
• Avoiding reminders of the traumatic event
• Irritability or anger
• Difficulty concentrating
• Feelings of guilt or shame
• Being easily startled
• Difficulty trusting others
• Feeling disconnected from yourself or those around you
Trauma can have a significant impact on relationships, work, parenting, physical health, and overall quality of life.
Psychotherapy provides a safe, supportive, and collaborative environment to begin processing traumatic experiences at a pace that feels appropriate for each individual. Together, we work to develop effective coping strategies, improve emotional regulation, increase a sense of safety, and gradually reduce the impact trauma has on daily life.
Treatment may involve:
• Understanding how trauma affects the brain and body
• Building emotional regulation skills
• Developing grounding and stabilization techniques
• Processing traumatic experiences when appropriate
• Reducing avoidance behaviours
• Improving sleep and daily functioning
• Rebuilding confidence and resilience
• Strengthening healthy relationships
Our approach to trauma treatment is individualized, compassionate, and evidence-based. We draw from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based approaches, grounding techniques, somatic strategies, and trauma-informed care. Every treatment plan is tailored to each client's unique experiences, strengths, and goals.
For some individuals, traditional psychotherapy is the best approach. Others may benefit from Movement & Exercise Psychotherapy™ (MEP™).
MEP™ integrates psychotherapy with purposeful movement and exercise. For some trauma survivors, movement can support emotional regulation, body awareness, stress reduction, and reconnecting with the body in a safe and structured way. MEP™ is always individualized and adapted to each person's needs and comfort level.
We work with children, teens, and adults who have experienced trauma, including individuals living with post-traumatic stress, childhood trauma, workplace trauma, chronic stress, and first responder-related trauma. Treatment is always tailored to each individual's developmental stage, goals, strengths, and current needs.
Virtual psychotherapy is available throughout Ontario and provides a convenient way to access trauma-informed care from the comfort and privacy of your own home. In-person Movement & Exercise Psychotherapy™ sessions are available in Orangeville, Ontario.
